15 second TV Promo; Z Survivor

For this project we had to create a 15-second fictional reality TV game show promo. In MGR we did all the preproduction and created the 5-second bumper (the ending with the logo and time of the show). In AMG we use all the preproduction from MGR to create the 15-second promo. We then let our classmates and instructor comment and critique our promos and we make a revised version of that promo.
This fictional TV show is called Z Survivor, a reality based TV show that is a cross between Survivor and The Walking Dead. The whole point to the show is that 10 contestants are placed into a bunker with enough food and water for a few days. When they come out of the bunker, they are engulfed in a zombie apocalypse. Each season would have a different types of zombies; from slow dimwitted zombies like those in Night of the Living Dead, to fast paced, only a scratch will kill you zombie like those in 28 Days Later.
Unlike many other shows, the contestants don’t get voted off, or picked by judges. The winner is the one who last the longest with out “dying”. While for safety reason no one is actually killed, but depending on the type of zombie, a single bite or scratch and you will turn. Or another survivor could take you out. It truly is a game of survival with the added twist of zombies everywhere.
No power, no food, or water, the ability to find shelter, make weapons, stay hidden are the keys to survival. If you think making a fire is hard when you don’t have any matches, try making it so that the zombies don’t see or smell it at the same time.

Once I knew the style I wanted I needed to create the people, the dead people, and the zombies. I started off by creating the people first, then adding a skeleton to it. From there I was able to make the dead people and the zombie.
Once the shape was determined I chopped it up into 14 pieces to make them into paper puppets. I then added weapons and hats to mix it up a bit.
The zombies were broke up into 17 pieces, since they would be bent over and eating flesh, they needed more parts that could be animated.
Fly around and loop of the animations of the "paper dolls" used in the promo.
REVISED PROMO
Revised promo
We had to take our videos and revise it using the suggestions our classmates made while critiquing our videos.
So here is my revised version of my promo for the show “Z Survivor”. I took what everyone said and instead of picking and choosing I did everything. First I brightened every thing up a bit. I turned down the final splat sound with the bat hit and double checked the sound alignment of all the splats. I made the text 3D, and slowed down the pan/track at the “9 will turn” scene so it would not be so blurry.  I played with the paths of the texts to smooth out the motion of them. Made the blood splat seem like it was part of the “Z” in the logo, thus no more twist and the color matches for a better transition. Made the final logo appear on the paper background for at least 1.5 seconds before the paper fades to black, and then the logo. Finally I did not like the way the horizon looked being so flat and straight. So I added a vignette to the sky at the horizon to make it seem really dark and to break up the straight line of the page.
The whole thing was of the camera taking a trip around a piece of paper (like a pop-up book) following the shape of the letter “Z” from the logo. Thus why I made all the animations so flat and 2D in a 3D environment.
It was a fun project that I enjoyed doing very much. Though I may have spent more time on it than I should have, but it was worth the learning experience and was very enjoyable.
